New York copper futures closed at $6.89 per pound on Wednesday, setting an all‑time high and matching similar historic peaks in London. The metal’s year‑to‑date gain exceeded 15 %, surpassing the performance of gold, silver, Bitcoin and the S&P 500 index.

The price surge is largely attributed to a rapid expansion of artificial‑intelligence infrastructure. The construction of large data centres, the extension of electricity grids and the deployment of energy‑intensive AI systems have amplified demand for copper. Electric‑vehicle production and broader electrification projects also contribute to the upward pressure. At the same time, global copper mining output fell 1.1 % in the first half of the year, with Chile’s production dropping 6.6 % due to adverse weather and lower ore quality. While the International Copper Study Group reports a global surplus in processed copper, the decline in mining output raises concerns that supply may struggle to meet future demand.

Tariff policy has further tightened the market. President Donald Trump’s 50 % tariff on semi‑processed copper products last year and the possibility of additional tariffs have altered trade flows, prompting traders to ship large volumes to the United States before new duties take effect. The uncertainty surrounding tariffs has encouraged companies to stockpile copper and shift shipments to specific regions, disrupting global distribution. Together, the AI‑driven demand, supply constraints and tariff uncertainty have created a sustained upward trend in prices, which could raise production costs for manufacturers of automobiles, computers, electrical wiring and energy infrastructure, with the final impact on consumers depending on firms’ pricing strategies.
